Testimonials

As a U.S. registered nurse, I was very cautious about getting a discounted surgery outside of the U.S.  However, after  thorough research on the internet, and after many emails and phone calls, I felt very comfortable going to India for a Lap Band and Tummy Tuck.

Before my arrival, Medical Discounts International, a California based medical information company, put me in contact with Life Smile, the Powai Lake, India based medical travel company.  Life Smile immediately put me in email contact with my surgeons in India.  We corresponded regularly.  They answered all my concerns and questions, and I received all the pre-op instructions from the surgeons. Life Smile sent me a detailed visit itinerary, details on places of interest, important English to Hindi language phrases, and details on all the important emergency phone numbers of the hospital, doctors, US Embassy in India and 24 hour, 7 day Life Smile support services phone number.

On my arrival to the International Airport in New Delhi, I was met and greeted by a Life Smile representative..  I was driven to my pre-arranged hotel in a luxury SUV.  We spent the next day getting lab tests, X-rays and going to pre-arranged consultations at the hospital.  The hospital was beautiful   In my experience, it was equal to the best hospitals in the U.S.  Everyone at the hospital from the cashiers to the housekeepers to the nurses and doctors spoke good English and made me feel right at home. My son, who was with me even said the hospital food was delicious.

It was very well equipped with the newest and most advanced equipment.  In fact, I learned that the hospital is on the top of the best hospitals in Asia list.  The hospital is accredited by the JCI (JCAHO), the International commission based in the U.S. which checks out hospitals to ensure the best quality healthcare worldwide. If the hospital passes their strict quality checks, then they get the "seal of quality approval" from JCI.

During the next few days, a personal driver and Life Smile representative took us on the two day Golden Triangle Tour which included a visit to the Taj Mahal; Fort and Sikandara at Agra; Fatehpur Sikri Forts; and the lake and palaces at Jaipur. There is a lot of ancient and beautiful history to be seen. and the tour was narrated by a trained tourist guide. After the tour, we checked into the hospital for pre-surgery screening and stay.

The Life Smile representative stayed at the hospital and helped me with completing all the required pre-surgery forms.  The next day, I had my surgical procedure.  The Life Smile representative waited outside the operating room during my surgery and was there when I woke up in ICU. I have never had better care than I received by the medical staff at this hospital.. The surgeons were very professional, but they also spoke at a level that the average person could understand. Both of my surgeons had great credentials and excellent experience.  They were nice and friendly, and they made me feel that my health was their number one concern.  My cosmetic surgeon was US qualified and was trained with the best U.S. plastic surgeons.

The no frills hotel was a small, clean and peaceful hotel facing a park and an adjoining church. i enjoyed my morning and evening walks with flowers, birds, butterflies, tall tress and pleasant weather. The staff at the hotel provided excellent service.  Life Smile provided the post-operative dietary chart prepared by the hospital dietician to the 24 hour kitchen at the hotel.  I was served with all the recommended liquid diet every hour in the comfort of my room.  My son loved the hotel restaurant food.

A Life Smile representative visited us everyday during our stay at the hospital and the hotel to ensure that we were comfortable. Life Smile arranged for the medications, packaged juices and they even arranged a three days Henna (temporary Indian Tattoo) training session in the comfort of my hotel room.

We were always in touch with our family and friends back home through the cell phones provided by Life Smile, Life Smile also arranged for an escorted tour to local markets, a handicrafts bazaar and modern malls.  I am very confident of the excellent quality of healthcare in India and would not hesitate to have more procedures completed there.  I highly recommend the affordable the medical surgery treatment packages available through Medical Discounts International and facilitated by Life Smile.

At first I was skeptical about having cosmetic surgery in India, but surprisingly enough the health care services were excellent. At the hospital the rooms wee not only air conditioned, they were also VERY clean. I preferred to stay at the hospital during my entire stay, and it was a very nice experience.  All the services, staff, and physicians were absolutely great, and they all provided a special touch of personal care.  I enjoyed my recovery time watching cable TV with my favorite English language international channels, sleeping, reading and eating.  This time to relax was important for me. I would definitely recommend traveling to India for surgery it's cheaper and the results are brilliant.   I plan on coming back soon to have jaw bone surgery.  Thank you Medical Discounts and Life Smile.

R.S., London, UK

I am very happy with the results of my RNY Gastric Bypass weight loss operation facilitated by Life Smile. Since I had visited India twice earlier, I was very confident of the world-class quality healthcare available there. The email contacts with Life Smile were very prompt and provided very good and detailed information on all of my queries. I had access to the bariatric surgeon both by telephone and email. The surgeon helped me prepare for the procedure, and he promptly addressed all my concerns.

My husband and I were met and greeted by a Life Smile representative at the airport.  We were provided with a cell phone for emergency contacts, and we were given access to an international call facility to keep in touch with our family and friends.   A SUV transferred us throughout our stay. Life Smile coordinated all the arrangements and made sure we were in the right place at the right time.  It was very efficient.

The surgery went very well.  I was very happy and comfortable with my surgeon and the surgical team.  After the surgery and recuperation, we enjoyed visiting the city.  We went on a sight seeing tour and shopping with a Life Smile representative. We enjoyed our 24 day peaceful recuperation in exotic Goa.  After my surgery, I lost a lot of weight, and I felt very good.  Thanks to my supportive surgeon and to Life Smile my health care trip to India was comfortable.  Everything went well, I am very happy with the surgery results.  With less weight to carry, I look forward to my life ahead.

Rising popularity of international medical travel reveals
deterioration of U.S. healthcare system

Defenders of organized medicine are fond of saying that the United States has the best healthcare in the world, but that idea can now be challenged. Many Americans no longer believe we have the best healthcare in the world, but few Americans doubt that healthcare in the U.S. is the most expensive in the world.  In fact, in terms of results for dollars spent, the United States certainly ranks very near the bottom of the list of all industrialized nations. The U.S. gets far less actual healthcare than anyone else for each dollar spent.

This realization is now hitting the general public, and they are increasingly leaving this country to find offshore locations and assess quality medical care and surgical procedures elsewhere. This phenomenon is called "international medical travel."   With international medical travel, patients who might normally undergo some sort of medical procedure in the United States, usually a costly surgical procedure, would instead travel outside the U.S. to have the procedures done in a world class internationally accredited facility.

As a result of traveling outside the U.S. for medical care, Americans get excellent medical care, personalized treatment, and save an enormous amount of money. International medical procedures can be performed for as little as one-tenth the cost of what would normally be charged here in the United States. Modern internationally accredited hospitals are often newer; better equipped; higher quality trained staff (lower RN to patient ratio); better technology; and newer equipment than what is available in most U.S. hospitals. International medical centers are typically staffed by English speaking personnel and U.S. or European trained physicians. International medical surgical procedures are performed with the same technology and expertise, yet international medical care is only a fraction of the price charged to uninsured Americans here in the U.S.

For example, a knee replacement surgery in a high-tech international hospital performed by a U.S. trained surgeon could cost as little as $7,000.  The same  surgery in the U.S. could easily exceed $60,000. Heart bypass in an international world class hospital costs around $10,000. In the US, a patient could be charged well over $100,000. Gastric bypass surgery in the U.S. can cost $30,000. Internationally it can be done for $10,000.

So where do the cost savings come from? How can international hospitals offer world class services at much lower prices? The answer lies in the economics of healthcare in the United States and the amount of waste that is present in the U.S. healthcare system.

The U.S. has an antiquated bureaucratic health care delivery system. Due to taxpayer-funded health insurance and private health insurance, hospitals and medical providers are top heavy with expensive non-clinical personnel. In other words, things would be a lot simpler and far less expensive if prices were lower and Americans were allowed to price shop for the medical procedures they need.  Rather than having to go through a monstrous bureaucratic system, a medical traveler in another country eliminates the need to help pay for an expensive bureaucracy and saves as much as 80%. As a medical traveler, the dollars are actually going to the surgeons, anesthesiologists and other hospital workers who are attending to the patient.

Another reason international surgical procedures are so much more affordable in outside the U.S. is because of the liability issue. In the United States, doctors and hospitals must carry extremely expensive medical malpractice insurance policies. Thus, international medical travelers save a fortune by essentially not funding the legal fees, settlements and malpractice insurance costs normally found in the U.S. healthcare system.  Due to higher quality more affordable medical care, an increasing number of American are opting to have their surgical procedures done outside the U.S.

India International Medical Travel

International medical travel is a developing concept where people from industrialized nations travel to international destinations to get affordable, quality, world class medical care. The most commonly sought international procedures include cardiac surgery, orthopedic surgery, transplants, cosmetic surgery and dental care. The reason Powai Lake is a favorable destination is because of it's infrastructure and technology in which is in par with those in USA, UK and Europe. India has some of the best hospitals and treatment centers in the world with the best world class facilities.

As health care costs skyrocket, patients in the U.S. are looking overseas for affordable world class quality medical treatment. India is one of the premier destinations that is capitalizing on its low costs and highly trained doctors to appeal to these "medical travelers" . Even with airfare, the cost of going to India for surgery can be markedly cheaper, and the quality of services is often better than that found in the United States and UK. Indeed, many patients are pleased at the prospect of getting the highest quality care at much more affordable prices.

India is a Primary World Class Quality Medical Travel Destination

India is considered the leading country promoting international medical travel, and it is now moving into a new area of "medical outsourcing," where subcontractors provide services to the overburdened medical care systems in western countries.  India's National Health Policy declares that treatment of foreign patients is legally an "export" and deemed "eligible for all fiscal incentives extended to export earnings." Government and private sector studies in India estimate that international medical travelers could bring between $1 billion to $2 billion into the country by 2012. The reports estimate that international medical travel to India is growing by 30 per cent a year.

India's top-rated education system is not only creating large numbers of computer programmers and engineers, but an estimated 20,000 to 30,000 doctors and nurses each year.

The Indian international medical travel business began to grow in the 1990s with the deregulation of the Indian economy.  The deregulation drastically cut the bureaucratic barriers to expansion and made it easier to import the most modern medical equipment. The first patients were Indian expatriates who returned home for treatment; major investment houses followed with money and then patients from Europe, the Middle East and Canada began to arrive.  U.S. and European patients usually get a package deal that includes flights, transfers, hotels, treatment and often a post-operative vacation.
