What is hip replacement surgery?
Hip replacement surgery (also known by hip arthroplasty or total hip replacement(THR)) is the process of replacing a diseased or damaged hip joint with an artificial hip joint. This is one of the most common orthopedic surgery treatment in case of severe arthritis damaged hip joint. About 200,000 of these surgeries are done in the United States every year.

How the total hip replacement is done?
The surgeon removes the damaged cartilage and bone and then positions the new artificial surfaces to restore the alignment and function of your hip. Special surgical cement may be used to fill the gap between the prosthesis and remaining natural bone to secure the artificial joint.

Hospital Stay & Post Hip Replacement Care

An exercise regimen & an iron rich balanced diet will help in speedy recovery to normal. Most people can drive on their own in 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.

After surgery of total hip replacement, precautions to take are:
 

  • Avoid falls & stairs in the first few days
     
  • Donnot cross your legs or bend them more than 90 degrees.
     
  • Use a pillow or some other soft cusion between your legs for the first few days.
